What Is Ar-Rawdah?

Ar-Rawdah ash-Sharifah, often simply called "The Rawdah", is the area between the Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ blessed tomb and his minbar (pulpit) in Masjid an-Nabawi, the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"What is between my house and my pulpit is a garden from the gardens of Paradise."

[Sahih al-Bukhari]

This hadith gives the Rawdah its immense spiritual status — a literal piece of Paradise on Earth.

Significance
  • It is the most sacred place in Masjid an-Nabawi.
  • Believers from around the world come to pray two rak’ahs, make du’a, and send peace and blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ.
  • The Rawdah represents proximity to the Prophet, acceptance of du’a, and divine mercy.
Pilgrims often describe their time in the Rawdah as overwhelming — a moment of deep emotion, tears, gratitude, and spiritual closeness.
The Rawdah is marked by its distinct green carpet and lies:
Between the Prophet’s ﷺ room (his burial chamber) and his minbar
Inside the old, original section of the mosque
Accessible through gated time slots due to high demand
